Resumo da Comunicação

"This study intends to gain insights regarding college students’ Internet usage, in terms of Internet experience, reasons for use the Internet and its associated behaviours.  It also explores the acceptance/receptivity in what concerns to students who live in a developing area towards a system of teaching/learning which intends to be different from the more traditional methods. Additionally, intends to analyze the type the relationship among loneliness, Internet experience and reasons for using Internet as well as Internet behaviours.

To achieve this purpose, we included 170 first-year students who are enrolled in several courses taught at Madeira University, in Portugal. The results indicate that most of students use the Internet on daily basis routine not only for academic purposes but also for social activities. The outcomes also show that the majority of the participants seemed to show preference for more traditional learning methods, such as individual preparation based on manuals, attending the class and clarifying questions with the teacher instead of on-line learning methods.  However, it should be noted that students seemed to be receptive to online learning methods. Furthermore, unlike most studies, ours findings reveal that high levels of loneliness were not associated with excessive of use Internet by college students. The findings also suggest that the college students who have high levels of loneliness were more likely to be more open and sincere on online relationships than in face-to-face approach, to be friendlier, to use the internet to cope with stressful situations and to feel better."
